Filipino-American stars Hailee Steinfeld, Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie rocked the red carpet at the annual Met Gala in New York on Monday night (September 13).
The Met Gala is held annually to raise funds to benefit the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA). This year’s theme was “In America: A Fashion Lexicon” which highlights American fashion.
Hailee fans could barely recognize the Hollywood actress who graced the red carpet in a snowflake-inspired look. The 24-year-old Fil-Am actress sported a fierce blonde hairstyle and bleached eyebrows. Her new outfit complemented her Iris van Herpen dress and high heels perfectly.
Olivia stunned in a Saint Laurent sheer black lace bodysuit lined with a flamboyant feathered neckline. To finish off her look, the Fil-Am popstar donned matching silver jewelry and sky-high platform heels.
RnB star Saweetie, who always offers adventurous outfits in classic silhouettes, struts the red carpet in a dazzling red bodycon dress Christian Cowan that flaunted both the Philippine flag and the black American flag. The custom dress comes with a sheer train and a thigh slit. She completed her look with metallic jewelry.
“I have two flags delicately draped over my body,” Saweetie told reporters on the red carpet. “One of them is the Black American Heritage Flag and the other is the Filipino flag because I’m black and Filipino, and that’s what makes me an American girl.”
Just a day before the Met Gala, Olivia and Saweetie both won awards at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA).
Olivia’s “Driver’s License” won the MTV VMA Song of the Year and Push Performance of the Year award. It was the first song from her debut album “Sour”. She also won the award for Best New Artist at the VMAs.
Meanwhile, Saweetie’s “Best Friend” music video, starring Doja Cat, won the award for Best Art Direction by Alec Contestabile.
Another Fil-Am artist, Bruno Mars, alongside Anderson Paak and Silk Sonic, won “Best R&B” and “Best Editing” for the sexy summer track “Leave the Door Open”.
Social media influencer Bretman Rock and TikTok sensation Bella Poarch also graced the red carpet at VMA.
Bretman wore a black and yellow animal print Roberto Cavalli dress paired with black leather thigh-high boots. The dress, which was taken from the Cavalli archives, was actually worn by singer Aaliyah in VMAs 21 years ago.
Bella wowed the crowd with a dress designed by Project Runway Season 14 former student Candice Cuoco. Cuoco described the stunning look as “a multi-beaded lace corset coat with a sculptural lace-up bodice and sleeves, paired with lace bell bottoms and a tiered train topped with black leather butterflies and Victorian trims. sewn by hand “.
